There are some things that full-time RVers experience that are far different from living in a traditional home. While there are many obvious benefits to RV living such as the freedom and flexibility to travel, there are also hidden benefits to RV living that may not have been considered. These lesser-known advantages can greatly enhance your quality of life while on the road.
If you think about full-time RVing, it feels like a cramped living quarters with little space for personal belongings. If you’ve read my post sharing the pros and cons of RV living full time, you can see that it’s sort of true for some. But there are also hidden benefits that come along with it. Here are some of them:
1. Minimalism
If there’s one full-time RV living tip I learned in our RV living journey, it is that less is more, literally.
Living in an RV forces you to live like a minimalist, this includes downsizing and getting rid of unnecessary possessions. Throughout the times when we used to full-time RV, it was such a liberating experience as it allowed us to focus on the things that truly matter in life. By living with fewer material possessions, you may find yourself feeling less stressed and more content with what you have.
In addition, adopting a minimalist lifestyle is freeing. With limited space in an RV, there is less room for excessive consumption and waste. This not only benefits you but also your wallet. That includes throwing your trash more often and not letting it pile up in your home.
2. Quality Time with Family and Nature
One of the biggest advantages of full-time RV living is the opportunity to spend quality time with your loved ones while surrounded by nature. Without the distractions and responsibilities of a traditional home, you can truly disconnect from the hustle and bustle of daily life and reconnect with your family.
Whether it’s hiking through national parks or sitting around a campfire under the stars, RV living allows for more meaningful experiences together as a family. It also provides endless opportunities for adventure and exploration, which can bring families closer together.
3. See the Country and Travel
Have you ever thought of the possibility of traveling anywhere in the US and anytime you want to? We lived in that constant state of wanderlust when we were full-time RV living. With a mobile home, you have the freedom to travel and explore any part of the country at your leisure.
From beaches to mountains, cities to small towns, there is always something new and exciting to discover on the road. You can also save money on accommodations by staying in budget-friendly RV parks or even boondocking (camping for free on public land).
4. Your House and Vehicle all at once
I know that it’s an obvious pro, but if you really think about it, how often does a person get to travel and still have all their familiar belongings with them? With an RV or camper, you essentially have your house and vehicle combined into one. This not only saves money on gas and travel costs but also eliminates the hassle of packing and unpacking every time you move.
5. Save Money on Food while Traveling
Take a drive to the grocery store and cook it up in your camper. You can save a lot of money on food while traveling since you have your own kitchen on wheels and you don’t have to eat out at restaurants. Plus, cooking and eating together as a family can be a fun and bonding experience.
6. No More Yard Work
Say goodbye to mowing the lawn, raking leaves, and other tedious yard work. When living in an RV, you’ll have little to no maintenance for outdoor spaces. Instead, you can spend more time enjoying nature or exploring new destinations.
7. Be a Snowbird and follow the Sun
A snowbird literally migrates from cold northern climates to warmer southern regions during the winter months. With an RV, you have the freedom and flexibility to do just that. You can travel with the seasons and follow the sunshine. Head to Arizona or Florida and set up camp.
8. Meet New People
RVing is a great way to meet new people and make friends from all walks of life. Campgrounds and national parks often have communal areas where you can socialize with other travelers, participate in activities, or even attend potluck dinners. You never know who you might meet and the new friendships you could form while on the road.
To get an idea of which are the best National parks to visit when you start RV living, I’ve wrote this article about it.
9. Become More Active
Looking for ways to stay healthy while traveling? RV travel gives you an opportunity to improve your health by moving your body more and getting outdoors each day. With access to hiking trails, water sports, and other outdoor activities, living in an RV can encourage you to get up and get moving.
10. Work Remotely if Needed
My husband Tony and I have been able to work remotely make money while traveling. It has been life-changing as we were able to take back more time with our kids and make an income while traveling. It also gave us the flexibility to stay in one place for longer periods of time if needed, making it easier to explore a specific region or take on short-term work projects.
We were able to create a full time RV internet set up and work online, which was a game-changer for remote work. I’ve written this list of full time RV internet options you can use while traveling, so you can keep your job and make money while exploring the country.
